Eating in college doesn’t have to mean dining on leftover pizza and ramen for days on end. There are so many recipes that you can make in your dorm that taste delicious and won’t break your already tight budget. We know that living on campus means having limited kitchen resources. That’s why College Times decided to test out some fun and easy dorm room recipes that can be made with just a microwave. Sound too easy? Actually, it was!

MORNING FUEL:
This dorm-style latte is for those mornings when you’re too lazy to leave your room for Starbucks. You might feel weird whisking milk in your bedroom, or you might feel like a badass
barista. Either way, it’ll taste good.

What you’ll need:
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1/3 cup of coffee or espresso
• 2 mugs
• Whisk

Directions:
1. Microwave milk for one minute.
2. Place whisk in the cup and hold whisk handle between your palms, rubbing your hands back and forth quickly to create foam.
3. Remove foam and pour remaining milk into coffee.
4. Spoon foam over the top.

Estimated cost: $.80

BREAKFAST:
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not go all out with an omelet in a mug? Feel free to college it up with cheap ingredients. You can microwave bacon or toss in some spinach. We just used mozzarella, because who doesn’t love cheese?

What you’ll need:
• 2 eggs
• 1 tablespoon milk
• Toppings of your choice
• Salt
• Pepper
• Mug

Directions:
1. Crack eggs in the mug. Add milk. Beat with a fork.
2. Microwave for one minute.
3. Add toppings and microwave for another minute (or until egg is cooked).
4. Season to taste.

Estimated cost: $1.50

LUNCH:
Yesterday’s dining hall bagel is now today’s pizza bagel. You can use whatever toppings you’d like, such as marinara sauce with cheese or Nutella with banana. We opted for pesto and meatballs. Did we make the right decision? (Yes. The answer is yes.)

What you’ll need:
• 1 bagel
• 1 scoop of pesto
• Mozzarella (or cheese desired)
• Chicken meatballs

Directions:
1. Cut up meatballs and microwave for one minute.
2. Choose any flavored bagel. (Toast bagel first for crunchy crust.)
3. Spread with pesto.
4. Load bagel with meatballs and mozzarella.
5. Microwave for one minute or until cheese is melty.

Estimated cost: $4.04

DINNER:
You can’t waste anything in college, so we crafted up pesto pasta with meatballs with the leftover ingredients from the pizza bagel. Just switch out the bagel for noodles and get to microwaving.

What you’ll need:
• Pesto
• 1 cup water
• Rotini noodles (or any noodles of choice)
• Mozzarella
• Chicken meatballs
• Bowl

Directions:
1. Add one cup of water and noodles to a microwave-safe bowl.
2. Microwave for 5 minutes, stirring noodles after each minute. Drain water.
3. Top with pesto, meatballs and mozzarella and microwave for an additional minute.

Estimated cost: $3.06

DESSERT:
A day isn’t complete without dessert. With just three ingredients, you’ll be on your way to an ooey-gooey chocolate mug cake. Top it off with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or hot fudge if you’re feeling fancy.

What you’ll need:
• 1 egg
• 1/4 cup powdered sugar
• 1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder
• Mug

Directions:
1. Combine egg, powdered sugar and cocoa powder in a mug.
2. Whisk together until well mixed.
3. Microwave for one minute.
4. Enjoy!
