World of Beer planned to open its doors to its first western US location in Tempe on Wednesday night. With a vast, beer-specific menu, the newest Mill Avenue watering hole brings a whole world of possibilities to the downtown Tempe bar district.
With over 500 varieties of bottled beer and 50 taps representing a rotation of 65 different American craft breweries from 24 states and 40 different countries, this is the kind of place to really get your palate wet with all sorts of sudsy craft and import concoctions.
World of Beer is constantly rotating its kegs, so during any given month the bar may offer as many 200 different draft beers. You can rest assured knowing local breweries will be heavily represented, too. On a media preview night earlier this week, World of Beer was pouring brews from San Tan, Four Peaks and Sleepy Dog among others.
Though there are 30 World of Beer locations, World of Beer Tempe feels very local. Signs from Arizona breweries adorn the brick walls and menus from Mill Avenue businesses are provided for ordering purposes. Because food is not provided at the bar, general manager John Paul “JP” Watts said he will allow patrons to have food delivered.
The space is quite inviting. The historic building was restored to its original frame to feature a small patio setting in its front with a wrap around bar accessible through an open window. Once it cools down, World of Beer may open the roll-up garage style doors on its south wall, which will be a great place to enjoy a cold beer in the open air.
A room labeled “The Vault” features additional seating and four flat-screen TVs, perfect for a larger party or just a group looking to watch a game. The entire bar, though, caters to sports fans with over 20 50-inch TVs with sports packages.
Music fans will also enjoy the bar’s elevated stage above the bar, which will host live music every Thursday through Saturday nights.
Aside from daily weekday happy hour until 7 p.m., students have a lot to look forward to at World of Beer once the semester starts up, too. Not only is the bar a free Wi-Fi hot spot – for those between class brews – but Wednesdays at the bar will be WOB U Wednesdays. Anyone who works for, or attends a university, will get half-off his or her beer.
What is perhaps most impressive is World of Beer’s very attentive and knowledgeable staff. All employees attend a 10-day “beer school” before they start working on the floor, and it shows. Whether you don’t know what to order or are looking to try something new, World of Beer bartenders and servers are more than willing to help you out or offer a suggestion.
Cheers, Tempe! We’re excited about this place and you should be, too.
