The Psychology of What We Wear

I often think about how what we wear affects us psychologically, because I see a clear difference in the little things that I have to "go through" for fashion and beauty that my boyfriend doesn't. I know some guys are more into looks than others, but generally it seems that guys have it a lot easier; they can get by every day wearing a comfortable, baggier shirt, comfortable-fitting jeans, shorts or pants and flat shoes, not heels. Oh, and probably one of the biggest differences, boxers or loose fitting underwear where their junk can breath freely.

So, how do you think that affects them psychologically? Think about it. Us girls get all dolled up, or even if we're not getting too fancy, chances are we are wearing something tight like jeans that hurt our stomachs or bras and tops that we're bound into. And usually we wear uncomfortable shoes throughout the day, and when we go home what do we do? We quickly take off all these restricting clothes, kick off the painful shoes and put on something comfy like a t-shirt and pajama pants - this relaxes us.

Just being able to not have a bra on and to feel the sensation of being free and covered in the loose clothing is relaxing - so what would it do to us if we got the chance to feel like this all day? Are girls more uptight and tense because our clothes and beauty rituals are so taxing they make us this way? Are guys more laid back because they're basically wearing girl's versions of pajamas all day every day? I know girls don't have to dress in uncomfortable ways, and I'll be the first to preach that there are comfortable ways to also be stylish, but come on, it is so different.

At night my boyfriend and I will be watching TV and we both get so tired that we just want to go plop into bed and pass out. Well he's the only one that gets to do that. I, on the other hand, have to tie up my hair, wash my face, remove my eye makeup, put on face lotion (sometimes night cream) and then sometimes I lie in bed and moisturize my hands and feet so they get soft throughout the night. I guess I don't have to do ALL of these things, but I certainly have to take off my makeup or I'll wake up with puffy, irritated eyes because the makeup seeped into them as I slept, and that hurts. It just seems like my boyfriend has it so much easier. Maybe if he was wearing heels and makeup and a ponytail that gave him a headache all day, the problems he faced daily might be that much harder.

I know there are girls out there that can wake up just like guys and not wash their face, not put on makeup or uncomfortable clothing and that's fine, but it's not me. And maybe I'm doing this to myself, but I do like dressing in certain ways so I guess I'll just have to deal with what comes with it. And don't get me wrong, there are plenty of guys out there who put more effort into looking good than girls do, but they still don't wear a bra with an under wire, a thong up their butt and heels.

I love my boxers because they give my junk room to breathe. Sorry ladie, I love being a guy!
