Valley students share their thoughts on why they're participating in this year's presidential election

	Faizah Faruk Age: 21 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No, I haven’t.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “No.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “I think their stance on economic policy is very important because we’ll be graduating into a fairly poor market and their stance on educational reform because it will be our kids going into those school systems.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “We’ll I’m voting for Obama and I agree with his stances about women’s reproductive rights and economic policy reform.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “I think first and foremost we need to address the economic issues we’re facing right now. I think they need to let everyone know what they plan to do about the economy because we’re basically heading into a recession right now.”
	Gigi Barone Age: 19 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “No.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “The cost of tuition and everything that’s included in the economy I guess.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “He relates really, really well to younger people.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “Celebrate!”
	James Foster Age: 19 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “No.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “War!” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “He wants to stop the war.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “Stop the war! I’ve got cousins over there so I want them to come back.”
	Joseph Kim Age: 19 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “No.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “Obviously economics, but for me personally its morals like abortion, gay marriage, and things like that.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “That’s a hard one because I really don’t like either of them. It’s like a process of elimination. Like I’m voting for McCain because I don’t think Democrats handle economics well, and I like how strong McCain is in general.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “Take his pants off and run around the oval office! I’m dead serious! I mean, a president who can’t chill-ax will breakdown!”
	Kevin McGuirl Age: 19 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No, because I haven’t been old enough.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “Yeah, because he didn’t get nominated.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “It’s important to vote because it affects federal student loans.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “His qualifications and confidence.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “Lower the drinking age to 18!”
	Meghann Hollowell Age: 26 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “Yes, twice.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “Yeah, originally I was a Hillary supporter and now I’ve got Obama.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “It’s obviously their future. In this election I really feel like it’s all or nothing in regards to the war, our economy and just fundamentally inspiring people. There’s so much negativity and college students need someone who’s going to inspire them on a grassroots level to be more aware and positive.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “He’s very genuine, and he doesn’t focus on all the shit that’s going on, he focuses on the positive and how we’re going to change it. He’s doing a pretty good job explaining, all the things that are going on, and the root of the problems. Most people want instant gratification but he’s focusing on fixing the root of the problems.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “You know, everyone’s focusing on the economy right now, I say fuck the economy. I think we should focus on global warming solutions and taping into our renewable resources and that will spawn green jobs, which will ultimately help our economy too.”
	Roicia Banks Age: 19 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “No, this is my first time.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “Yea, when Hillary didn’t get nominated and when Barack came to ASU, that’s when I changed my mind.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “Because our time is now and we’re going to be the future so we need to be aware of what’s going on around us and because we’re the ones who are going to have to live with it.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “I like the fact that he’s up front about the issues rather then beating around the bush. He’s trying to make it as easy as possible for us to understand the issues that are concerning Americans.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “Fix health care to where everyone has it and devote more time and money to medical research.”
	Seth Derouen Age: 18 Have you ever voted in a presidential election before? “Obviously not.” Have you changed your mind in the last year about who you’ll be voting for? “No.” Why do you think students should care about this election? “Cause our lives pretty much depend on how the economy’s going to turn out and the careers that we’re choosing now while we’re in school.” What do you like most about the candidate you’re voting for? “Personally, I like that he’s a war veteran that has been part of something that meant a lot to our country.” What’s the first thing the new president should do when he takes office? “I have no idea … something with oil or the stock market!”
