Okay, am I the only one that thinks this is the most pointless job around? I mean the sign holders are so distracting that you rarely even read what the sign says! Usually you're just staring at them thinking, "Wow, what a crappy job," or watching the crazy shows they put on. Either way, it's hardly effective for the business that is paying them to be there.

I'm not only speaking as an Arizona resident that drives by these people almost every day in my car, but also as a former sign holder myself. I actually held a sign for one day and it was horrible! It was over last summer and I just stood there like an idiot with this huge sign that announced specials for a pizza place. I just watched as all these people in cars drive past me with looks on their faces like they pitied me. I don't even think people read the sign; it certainly didn't cause any people to go to the business that day.

But here's the thing, sign holders usually make about $10 an hour. That's pretty good for just chilling on the corner; I mean some of them just sit there listening to music.

So what's with the shows they put on? Have you seen these people? Some flip signs like maniacs, and while it's an interesting show as you wait at a red light, you can't ever read what the sign says because it's upside down. I mean do the businesses that these sign holders work for allow this? I think it kind of defeats the purpose of a big sign if you can read it.

There's this kid that holds a sign right by my house and he is so funny because he is constantly listening to his iPod and rocking out as he stands there. He gets really into it and basically performs as if he's the lead signer of a band onstage, and the sign is his guitar. I've seen him probably five times, and I still can't even tell you what business his sign is promoting because he is so distracting.

What do you think, are sign holders an effective way to market a business? Let me know; I'm interested! jillian@ecollegetimes.com

I'll answer your question with a single word; yes. And I'll even clarify it further. I work for a sign event company that holds major events that includes around 10+ sign twirlers. (Continued…)

I agree with Jillian, sign holding is crazy. I have seen so many of the people out on the corners and I have to say I have almost never been able to read any of their signs. (Continued…)
