Fashion is a constant cycle. Often, trends are simply a previous rage that is back.

I was watching a couple ’90s movies lately – “Reality Bites” and then, “Junior” (I know!). My jaw was on the floor when I saw how people dressed back then.

Don’t get me wrong, I dressed like that, too, but it was horrible! Janeane Garofalo wore clothes in “Reality Bites” that made me physically uncomfortable: jean button-down tank tops. Do you remember those?!

Then in “Junior,” Emma Thompson rocked huge button down blouses with shoulder pads, paired with belly bulging ill-fitting slacks. Wow! It’s like they said to themselves, “What can I wear that will be the absolute worst for my figure?” And then wore it!

If you think about it, you’ll realize that trends are mostly just updated versions of the past. Right now, ’80s hip-hop is back with things like neon, boom boxes and mismatches, but it’s done in this updated 2008 way. Next, the ’60s hippie trends will be back, then ’70s disco-inspired prints and platforms, and so on and so on.

Here are some old trends that you may have wished would never be back in style. But if worn in the updated 2008 way, many of these are definitely stylish now. Others are some that I wish will never be seen again!

Bad Trends that are Good Again

High Tops
Remember Pumps, and all those crazy high tops that were so popular? Well they’re back, especially updated retro editions and the good ol’ Converse high tops.

Stone Wash
        I know this is a scary word, but it can be cool. Please don’t go out and buy ’90s-fitting stonewash jeans or anything. However, do check out the updated versions that designers have been coming out with like grey stonewash skinny jeans or American Apparel’s stonewash colored t-shirts.

Overalls
        I, personally, can’t stand overalls since they can be so unflattering. But I’m not talking about farmer kind, those are bad. Now there are overalls that are fitted and flattering, so make sure you get a tighter pair if you decide to rock them.

Fanny Packs
        My boyfriend argues about this with me, he thinks they will never be back, but in the fashion world, they already are. See Carrie, from “Sex and the City.” There are little stylish versions that are totally cute and very practical if you’re doing a lot of walking or at an event like a concert.

Worst Trends of All Time

Mom Jeans
        Hello! Talk about unflattering. These highlight the belly bulge. Even if you don’t have one, these jeans will make it look like you do. Pair that with tapered legs and you have the some of the worst jeans of all time. 

Jean Shirts
        These lame tops need to stay in the ’90s, I’m not sure why it was trendy to dress like a rancher.

Even Worse  … Sleeveless Jean Shirts!
        I remember wearing these tucked into shorts, it was really bad. They’re just the farthest thing from feminine and flattering for a woman’s shape.

Extreme Whiskered Wash on Anything
        Wow, this was awful. It just makes the clothes look really cheap, not to mention – why would you want to draw attention to your hips, thighs or butt?

Scrunchies
        These are bad. If you still own one, go get it right now and throw it away. I would normally say donate it, but we don’t need these going to anyone else.
