Spark! Mesa's Festival of Creativity is bursting with uniqueness. Every moment will be showcasing something you've likely never seen before.
Sarah Moran, Mesa Arts Center's public relations director, says the event was inspired by a larger-than-life puppet show she witnessed in New York.
“As an adult I was blown away, and I thought about how my 5-year-old would react,” she says.
Every style of art will be represented during the weekend-long festival.
A traveling opera and theatre group that blends contemporary opera with modern music will perform on a trunk bed with projection surfaces and a rotating piano.
Throughout the weekend hip hop and spoken word performances will be happening, as well as live music in the Wells Fargo Garden.
The festival partnered with ASU Polytech to conceptualize the celebration of art and technology.
An ASU grad student put together a projection piece that uses attendees’ facial features in the art. Another created a steam machine that will portray an interactive story about a cactus.
This event promises to be “really cool no matter what age you are,” says Moran.
As you walk around, be on the lookout for strange, tall creatures on stilts, performers dressed in crazy colorful costumes, and atmospheric theater performers acting out around the festival.
Several community art projects will be set up for you to put your creative side to use. For example, you can help build a Lego rocket ship or create your own found object instrument. Stop by the hands-on circus for a good time.
Attendees can take an hour-long workshop for $5 that teaches how to create amazing visuals using Mac programs.
Everywhere you go, you'll witness something original and unique and the opportunity to interact with it all.
Leading up to the event, the Mesa Arts Center will be collecting pieces to use to yarn bomb the trees around the campus. Gather all the brightly colored yarn you can find and get to work. Pieces can be dropped off at the box office until the event kicks off.
